Fred in the Village: Day 24
Day 24: ON AIR
Today was the day. The thing I was trying NOT to think about all week finally showed up. Today was the day I would be on the radio. We woke up around 6:20am because we had church, but Daniel and Jabeth said they would both keep time. We had to leave church by 9:10am to be at the station by 9:30am. We arrived at church around 7:30am; the reason it took long was because we picked up Daniel’s family and Jabeth’s nephew. This is the Ugandan way, everyone helps everyone. Once at church the time kept ticking by, and if you ever get the chance to go to an African church or hear one it is almost impossible to hear what they are saying (for a visitor). Their accents are very strong. Right at 9am we started having the Lord’s Supper, so that took about 15 minutes. Then we had to get all five kids out of childcare which took another 15 minutes. During all of this, I was wondering, “guys, John said we can’t be late or they’ll skip me,” so I was freaking out!
On Time God
So yes, when we arrived we were about 10 minutes late. Fortunately, once there I still had the chance to speak on the radio, so that was cool. In that situation God showed me I need to have patience, and His will; will be done either way.
Intense Interview
When on the radio they asked me those questions I showed y’all yesterday and many more. The different questions involved racism, drug abuse, and just the sin in the daily life of a teenager. They also asked me how I over came it all. I said, “At the end of the day it all points back to God; you have to have a solid foundation with God. The youth of today try finding their identity in the world, but the world will never give you what you’re looking for.” They also took calls from anyone calling in. Many people said thank you and then asked me different questions. All in all a great experience and I thank Voice of Teso for having me, Mosh Akello for hosting and in the end all glory goes to God.
Sunday Afternoon
Our friend and team driver, John told me multiple people called him and said how much they loved the radio show for youth. Once the station talk was over we ate at Daniel’s house where the food was really good. Next we dropped Jabeth’s mom off at her family village. I was asleep for the ride there and I was falling asleep in and out while we visited. I’m guessing the talking this morning drained the energy out of me. It was Sunday so we had Jabeth’s savings meeting, but we were an hour late. They go for three hours so we didn’t miss much.
Like last time, as they talked about saving money Gianni and I just sat and talked. Today we talked about her hair, school, and even her birth family. She touched my heart when she said she feels like she can relate to me since we both had a hard past. Once the savings meeting was over I took a shower and we went out for chicken and chips. It was supposed to be like a celebratory outing but we were all too tired to say much.
My verse of the day is Philippians 2:1-4 and my prayer is that there would be a revival with the youth; that they would find their foundation in God. ~ Fred
Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.
